Vandal-Resistant Monument Sign Panels in Atlanta, GA for Winder Public Library

One of the best things about the sign industry is working one on one with a client to determine their exact needs, and then making a recommendation that accomplishes their needs – – and then some. Providing a material option that not only met the demands, but included additional benefits that surprised the client. Such was the case for a recent project for the Winder Public Library in Winder, GA. The library was going through a name change, and needed a replacement monument sign panel. The ideal sign panel would be attractive, easily readable, and would be long lasting and easy to maintain. While the graphics would be simple text, appearance would be an important factor.

The Options
The majority of monument sign panels are made one of three ways. First are sandblasted wood or sandblasted HDU. This option is quite popular because of its appearance – – with raised graphics on a “blasted” or recessed background, or recessed graphics that have been blasted on a protected background. The second option is engraved sign panels, made out of substrates such as wood, PVC, or acrylic. This option often produces striking results, using a variety of engraving techniques and varying depths. The final commonly-used option is an aluminum pan background with stud-mounted graphics made from metal, acrylic, formed plastic, or PVC. While each of these are excellent options, they do have limitations when it comes to high-traffic areas where durability is key – – especially for applications where vandalism and graffiti are frequently a concern.

The Challenges
Show me an exterior sign at a school, library, bus station, athletic facility, recreational facility, swimming pool, tennis court, soccer field, baseball field, nature trail, train station, apartment complexes, etc., and I’ll show you a target. Signs at these locations seem to be convenient canvases for “aspiring artists” who seem to be able to easily reconcile their need for expression with the public and private costs of their actions. Not only are spray paints and markers a threat to signs in these high-traffic areas, so too are rocks and balls, rackets, bats, and a variety of other tools to wreak havoc on your new sign. Signs in these areas get bumped, bruised, and climbed on.

Finding the Right Sign Material for Your High Traffic Area Project
So, what are the best options for high-traffic area signs? The answer to the question of what product can best survive the challenges of high traffic areas is ColorCore® from King Plastic Corporation. King ColorCore is highly durable, environmentally stabilized substrate that was developed for signage, marine, recreational and playground applications. Available in eighteen color combinations, its multiple layers of contrasting colors means it can be easily engraved using a CNC router to create attractive signage that stands up to the high-traffic demands that most substrates aren’t designed to withstand. ColorCore is available in three standard thicknesses; ¼”, ½”, and ¾”. ColorCore is manufactured using a state-of-the-art process called PolyFusion®, which produces a polymer that is highly impact resistant. ColorCore is also resistant to a wide variety of chemicals, ranging from sulfuric acid to boric acid to petroleum spirits. It is this resistance that makes ColorCore easy to clean, easy to remove graffiti from. King ColorCore is easily recyclable, does not off-gas when being cut or carved, and does not emit harmful gases when burned. ColorCore can be cleaned in most instances using soap and water.

Value-Added Channel Letters in Atlanta, GA for Benchmark Physical Therapy!

In today’s ultra-competitive business environment, everyone is looking for an edge.  Sometimes that edge can be found in less-obvious places, like storefront signage.

Town Brookhaven is a pedestrian-friendly urban village in Atlanta’s popular Brookhaven area.  Located just off Peachtree Road, residents and visitors can find a wide variety of merchants, ranging from Publix, Marshall’s, and Costco to a variety of trendy bars and restaurants, as well as all types of boutiques and salons.  In effort to create and maintain a consistent, attractive look, the developers of Town Brookhaven mandated a sign criteria that requires each merchant tenant to utilize reverse channel letters for their storefront signage.  One of the newest tenants at Town Brookhaven, Benchmark Physical Therapy turned to Big Mouth Signs for their new clinic at 705 Town Boulevard.  Big Mouth Signs has been a trusted business partner since 2010, and has provided quality signage execution, including site visits, permitting, design, production, and installation services throughout Metro Atlanta and the surrounding area.

Channel Letters - Benchmark - Brookhaven - 1

Reverse channel letter signs are not new, as they’ve long been popular with companies including fashion retailers such as Tommy Hilfiger and Luis Vuitton, as well as restaurants including Maggiano’s Little Italy.  As you might guess, reverse channel letters are manufactured just the opposite of a standard or “front-lit” channel letter.  Instead of an acrylic or polycarbonate face and a metal back, a reverse channel letter utilizes a metal face and a polycarbonate back.  Reverse channel letters are most often installed directly to the storefront façade, but can also be attached to a sign cabinet that is then mounted to the façade.  Once the sign has been installed and powered on, the internal light source illuminates the white painted interior of the letter.  This intense light bounces through the acrylic/polycarbonate back, and creates a visually appealing “halo” effect around the perimeter of each character.

Adding a little personality to your reverse channel letter sign is easy – – starting with your chosen font.  The outer face and sides (aka “returns”) of a reverse channel letter can be painted your choice of custom colors, and can be further enhanced using specialty finishes such as satin aluminum, scratched metal, oxidized metal, etc.  Since most reverse channel letters made today are illuminated using LED, you can also customize the look of the halo effect by choosing from a number of LED color options, including white, yellow, green, blue, and red.

For Benchmark Physical Therapy, we produced 3” deep aluminum reverse channel letters with custom color dark red faces and returns.  The letters were mounted directly to the façade with 1.5” spacers and non-corrosive threaded studs.  The finished product provides a premium look, and adds value to the brand.  While a lease requirement is an excellent reason to choose to utilize reverse channel letters – – but it’s not the only reason.  Reverse channel letters will add to the look of your storefront, and can help separate you from the competition.

If you happen to own a retail or storefront business, or are thinking about opening one, then you owe it to yourself to take the time to really investigate the possibilities for your storefront sign.  Big Mouth Signs can help.  We’ll take the time to review options with you, conduct a site visit, provide a layout showing how your new sign will look, followed by a free estimate – – including permitting and installation.  You can reach us at (770) 381-9300.  We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Lobby Signs for NEXTGEN in Atlanta, GA

Can the right lobby sign add value to your business? Does your sign make a statement? Does it tell a story? Making the right first impression is important in every business relationship, and your lobby sign is a key component in that process. An understated office sign might be telling your customers that your skill level is lacking. For example, imagine going into a dentist’s office, and the sign that welcomes you to the reception area is cheaply made. What other businesses need a quality lobby sign speaking silently to their customers? Insurance office? Law office? Doctor’s office? Engineering firm? If it’s important in their office, might it also make a difference in yours? If you deal directly with the public, the chances are the answer is “Yes”.

A well-designed lobby sign tells current and potential customers that you value their thoughts and opinions about your business or organization. Quality lobby signs communicate that details are important to you, and that appearance matters. Professionally-designed lobby signs add value to your business. There are lots of options available for your lobby or office sign.

What types of lobby signs are available? We custom-design and build our lobby signs, so they are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. All of our lobby signs are professionally designed and manufactured, using an assortment of interesting and visually-appealing materials. Lobby signs are often non-illuminated, but illuminated office signs are growing in popularity due in large part to the practicality of imbedded LED lighting, as well as external spotlights. The two main types of lobby signs are those with which the lettering or graphics are mounted directly to the lobby wall (typically using studs or “pins” and a mounting pattern), and those with which the lettering or graphics are mounted to a “backer” or “background” panel. Background panels also can be mounted directly to wall, again using stud-mounting and adhesives, or they can be mounted using a wide variety of popular standoffs.

What types of materials are used for Lobby Signs?

There are almost as many material options as there are lobby signs. Acrylics are a popular material choice, and can be used both for router-cut dimensional letters and graphics, as well as for background panels. Metals are another top choice, and we have available a wide variety of metals and metal finishes including brushed aluminum, polished aluminum, stainless steel, brass, copper, and bronze. Other excellent choices include a variety of wood options, PVC, and foam.

Why Big Mouth Signs?

At Big Mouth Signs, we understand that quality lobby signs and interior signs reinforce your brand message, and help tell your brand story. We know that it’s important to get it right, the first time. Because of this, we take the time to meet with you, to get a feel for your business.
