Eye-Catching Facility Signage in Lilburn, GA for Parkview Football

Facility Signs - Room-Marker for Parkview Football

Facility Signs – Room-Marker for Parkview Football

If you’ve followed Georgia High School football for any significant portion of the last twenty or so years, then you are no doubt familiar with Parkview Football.  Parkview’s football history includes a dominating 46 game winning streak that ran from 2000 to 2003, culminating in three consecutive state championships in Georgia’s largest classification.  With four total state championship over the past twenty seasons, Parkview owns a lofty place among the top programs in recent Georgia High School football history.

This past fall, Parkview Football moved into their new fieldhouse.  Before the move, Head Coach Eric Godfree called on Big Mouth Signs to design and produce a series of facility signs that would serve as markers for the rooms in the new building.  This new fieldhouse includes a Varsity Locker Room, Freshman Locker Room, Head Coach’s Office, Assistant Coaches’ Office, Pro Room, Training Room, Multi-Purpose Room, and Equipment Room.

Before beginning a facility sign project, we feel it’s important to visit the site.  There are two primary reasons we insist on doing this.  First, we need to get a feel for the project.  Which colors should we use?  Which colors should we avoid?  For this project, Parkview’s school colors are orange and white.  However, blue has long been used as an accent color.  The second reason for performing a site visit has more to do with the physical characteristics of the building itself.  It’s important before designing a series of facility signs to include details as to the amount of space we have available for each sign.  How large does the text need to be for readability?  A site visit provides important information as to the best color choices, proper materials, and ideal mounting options.

Once the site visit was complete, several design concerns were made clear.  First, the new facility room-marker signage for Parkview Football would need to attractive, yet durable and economical.  Second, the background of each sign needed color.  Third, we needed to keep the signs simple, with an emphasis on the Parkview Panther paw logo.  Finally, we needed to keep the signs consistent both in size and design.

The next phase in the Big Mouth Signs process is the design process.  Working with the Parkview Football staff, we developed a design that consisted of 3/16” thick clear acrylic, with a digital print graphic applied to the second surface.  The digital graphic features an orange background in the primary school color, with a subdued or faded orange paw logo.  The graphic has a white paw graphic outlined in blue in the foreground, a nod to the white paw logo on the team’s orange helmet.  A layer of white vinyl would then serve to protect the printed graphic.  Finally, the text portion of the layout would consist of white raised lettering.  The end result was a clean look that immediately catches your eye.  The design approval came quickly, and we were ready for production and installation.

Big Mouth Signs appreciates the opportunity to serve the Parkview community.  The facility room marker signs were the most recent of many projects we’ve produced for Parkview High School, the Parkview Community School, and for a variety of Parkview booster organizations.  We also appreciate the opportunity to provide services to a variety of other Gwinnett County Schools, including the following;

Channel Letter Sign Re-branding Project in Atlanta, GA for Pearle Vision

Channel Letter Sign Re-Branding Project in Atlanta, GA for Pearle Vision

In September of 2013, after more than fifty years as an icon in the eye care industry, Pearle Vision announced a completely remodeled store design and new brand logo.  The unveiling of the branding plan included significant changes to the brand color palette and a new brand logo.  Parent company Luxottica Retail of Mason, OH unveiled the new branding plan with an announcement at their licensing conference in April of 2013.  As franchise renewal agreements were signed, new remodels were scheduled.  From there, the transition from the old Pearle Vision to the new was on!  Storefront and interior signage would need to be transformed!

Pearle Vision was founded in 1961 by Dr. Stanley Pearle, with a vision to provide “the convenience and expert guidance of an eye care professional right in your neighborhood”.  From that humble beginning in Savannah, GA, Pearle Vision has grown to include more than 610 optical centers, providing on-site prescription eyeglass fulfillment and the “biggest selection of designer frames in town.”  The new brand logo represents a fresh look, while still reflecting on the company’s heritage.

The re-branding process for the Pearle Vision locations in Metro Atlanta began roughly 4-6 months later at the Canton Mill Shopping Center.  When it came time to begin transitioning the Canton location, the local franchisee chose Big Mouth Signs for their help and expertise in storefront signage and interior graphics.  Project specification documents were issued and the site visit process was initiated, followed by the sign permit process and consultation with the property management.  The conversion plans called for front-lit channel letters (direct-mounted to the building façade), with a new eyeglass logo and dimensional lettering “Est. 1961” of flat-cut aluminum for the store exterior.  The store interior would receive new translucent vinyl window and wall graphics, as well as a custom-built aluminum logo sign cabinet.

In addition to the Canton location, we’ve completed projects for the Pearle Vision optical centers in Gainesville, GA, Cartersville, GA, and Austell, GA, with preliminary plans in place for several additional locations.  So why – – with more than 670 sign companies in the Atlanta area – – did Pearle Vision choose  Big Mouth Signs?  We like to think the answer has everything to do with history.  Big Mouth Signs has developed a reputation for excellent customer service.  We conduct site visits to make sure the building dimensions are accurate.  We handle our own permitting, to insure a smooth permit process with minimal delays.  We use only the best materials, and we follow specs to the letter.  If you are old enough, you might remember the TV spots that featured a red-headed, freckle-faced boy, maybe around seven or eight years old, striking out as his father watched from the bleachers?  Dad saved the day by taking his son to Pearle Vision, music playing in the background, with the words, “Nobody cares for eyes more than Pearle”.  We like to think that’s the kind of sign company Pearle Vision was looking for, a company that would treat each optical center like their sign project was the most important one they were working on.  Maybe we are your kind of sign company too…

Innovative Office Signage in Columbus, GA for Path-Tec

Sometimes, it’s the little things that matter most.  The right office signs, including lobby directories, wayfinding signs or directional signs, office markers, conference room signs, etc., are like that accessory that doesn’t seem so important until you take it away – – the set of diamond stud earrings with the little black dress, or the gold cuff links with the black tuxedo.  And so, at Big Mouth Signs, we understand the finishing touches are important.  That’s why we provide a variety of outstanding office signage options from top manufacturers such as Modulex, Arris, Vista System, and Sign Pro Systems.  That’s why we’ll also take the time to meet with you, so that we can get a feel for your organization – no matter how small – and the environment you are trying to create.

In today’s increasingly complex and complicated world, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the information flowing back and forth.  We get so focused on the communication flow – – the impressions that are being created outside our four walls.  While that communication, and those impressions are obviously important, what about the impressions –  the environment – that is being created inside those four walls?  Have you considered the effectiveness of your office sign system?  When you hire a new staff member, does it take days, or weeks to recognize them with a name plate for their desk or work station?  Is it easy to tell if the conference room is available for use, or if someone has already scheduled a meeting?  How easy is it for a new employee to find their way around?  When you promote someone, how quickly can you recognize them for their promotion with a new office marker?

Arris Sign Systems offers an outstanding selection of office environment signs – – from desk and workstation signs to wall signs, directories, and overhead signs.  Arris offers a variety of freestanding signs as well.  It’s the outstanding simplicity of the system that makes it both attractive and cost effective for any office.  The individual frames that are part of the Arris Sign System can be customized through the use of Arris’ Accents decorative backers.  Arris’ design templates make printing and changing frame inserts a snap – – no need to wait days or weeks to recognize new staff members and promotions!

It’s the look and flexibility of the Arris product that resulted in Path-Tec, a Columbus, GA-based specimen management solutions provider.  When Path-Tec made plans to move into their new location, they turned to Big Mouth Signs to provide office environment signage solutions that fit their culture, and their budget.  What they needed was an effective office sign system that was attractive.  As a growing and vibrant company, their new office sign system needed to be flexible, with easy-to-update inserts.  It needed to be modular, so that as the company continues to grow, work station signage complimented office signage, directory signage, and even the signage in the reception area.

It’s been said that interior office signage isn’t for your customers, it’s for your employees.  Obviously, your lobby sign is a key component to any business message – – it provides a value message that cannot be overstated.  But, what about the signs that your employees and staff walk by every day, signs your customers may never see?  Your office sign system is a key part of that environment, and the messages formulated and delivered there.  Regardless of the type of business, messages are being conveyed every day, even when no one else is around.  What messages are being conveyed inside your four walls?

  • Written by Big Mouth Signs, a full service provider of all types of visual communications products, including office environment signs, wayfinding signs, and ADA signage. Based in Lilburn, GA, we proudly serve the Atlanta metro area with quality signage solutions that help your business get noticed!

Is your old lobby sign slacking on the job?

Imagine, for a moment, that you’re about to give a 60 second elevator speech before a group of potential clients for the very first time.  You realize just how important it is that you choose the perfect adjectives to describe your company.  As your mind flashes through words like “innovative” and “creative”, through “balanced”, “dominant”, and “expert”, you quickly realize that once uttered, you own them.  An “innovative” company has to look, feel, and act innovative in order to be viewed as credible.  The next day, you walk into the lobby or reception area of your business, look at the sign hanging on your wall and wonder if you used the right word.  Next, you wonder if you have the right sign.

Indoor 3D Logo Signs - Northgate Arinso

Choosing the right lobby sign is like choosing the right suit, or the right dress.  Match the sign to the impression you are trying to create.  Great lobby signs are a focal point – – they make a statement. Great lobby signs communicate without speaking.  Your lobby sign is the 60 second elevator speech that you never had to give.  There’s no need to list the adjectives to describe your business, it chooses them for you.  Poet Oscar Wilde once said, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.”  If Oscar’s words hold true, then what impressions are being created when a potential client walks into your business?

At Big Mouth Signs, we believe it’s impossible to build a great lobby sign without a face-to-face visit.  We believe that truly great lobby signs capture the personality of the company.  It’s because of this philosophy that we provide free onsite consultation, including an opportunity to see, feel, and touch a variety of material samples.  We know that a great lobby sign can have a significant impact on your business, and we offer solutions that make sense for your business and your budget.  We’ll offer material options so that you have a choice, and finish options that will make your sign fit in and stand out.  Our lobby sign options include;

5 Tips You Need to Know for Fantastic Wayfinding Signs!

STOP Sign DIrectionalIt’s been said that half the streets in Atlanta are named “Peachtree.”  While that’s a slight exaggeration, 71 roads in Metro Atlanta do include “Peachtree” somewhere in their name.  Think about it…  Peachtree Battle, Peachtree Walk, Peachtree Valley Road, Peachtree Industrial, Peachtree Parkway, South Old Peachtree – –  the list goes on and on.  While Atlanta natives quietly ponder how we ever managed without Google Maps and TomToms, imagine how visitors and newcomers cope with the confusing array of twisting, turning, name-changing drives and parkways, avenues and trails.

Before there were Garmins and Mapquest, before there were built-in navigation systems, there were outdoor wayfinding signs and directional signs.  Wayfinding and directional signs help get us to work, and they help us get home.  They are time savers and mistake-preventers.

For property managers – – from multi-family complexes to business parks and industrial parks – – effective and efficient outdoor directional signs, traffic control signs, and wayfinding signs are crucial.  Making sure that there is ease of entry and exit, that traffic flow is smooth and efficient, can make a world of difference in the perception of your property.  Nobody likes to waste time wondering which way to turn, or where they should park.  The challenge is finding the right balance between aesthetic value, functionality, and affordability.  We’re here to help.  Start with these “5 Tips You Need to Know for Fantastic Wayfinding Signs!”

Tip #1:  Walk the Property.  A sign company that wants to help you solve a problem will do this with you.  A sign company that wants to sell you a sign package, probably won’t.  Wayfinding Signs and Directional Signs should be available where people look for them.  Anticipate the need.

Tip #2:  Wayfinding Signs and Directional Signs should be easy to read.  Use legible fonts, and make the signs large enough that letter size isn’t an issue.  Use concise, simple content.  Maintain a good contrast between the background color and the color of the text.  Using two shades of neutral tones might be a great idea for the buildings on your property, it’s probably not a good idea for your signs.

Tip #3:  Anticipate the need to repair and replace your Directional Signs and Wayfinding Signs.  Your signs have lots of enemies…  Weed whackers damage the posts.  Bikes and cars run into them.  Signs are faded by the sun, rocks are thrown, paint is sprayed… the list is endless.  Minimize repair costs by building inexpensive “post boots” into the design – – they are functional and attractive.  Use a textured finish that will help hide blemishes.  Use metal or aluminum composite materials as backers to add strength and protection to engraved or sandblasted signs.  Avoid the use of costly foam sign materials such as HDU.  Protect your signs and with plantings such as Holly and Barberry.  For parking signs, position them far enough from the curb stops that they don’t become stop marks for vehicles.

Tip #4:  Use quality manufactured and safety signs where they make sense (See Tip #3 above).  It’s possible to design a Directional Sign and Wayfinding Sign package that incorporates economical metal traffic control sign blanks along with engraved directional signs and still achieve the desired level of curb appeal.   Use quality (minimum thickness .080 aluminum) engineer-grade reflective STOP signs, Speed Limit signs, Handicap Parking signs, and for any safety signs.

Tip #5:  Never skimp on the posts.  Pressure treated wood posts are much less expensive, but they are a temporary post.  A quality Directional Sign and Wayfinding Sign package will last a number of years.  Use aluminum tube posts (minimum 3” x 3”, with .125” wall) with a textured finish.  Insist the posts be set in concrete.  Consider you environment – – taller posts make sense where delivery and moving trucks are common.  For parking signs where the quantity of the signs makes it unfeasible to use aluminum tube posts, use galvanized metal – – they will cost a little more but won’t rust or fade like painted green metal posts.

Big Mouth Signs designs and installs quality Wayfinding and Directional Sign packages for property managers of multi-family and apartment complexes, office and business parks, and industrial complexes.  We’ll take the time to identify your needs, and we’ll provide solutions that make sense.  We’re located in Lilburn, GA and we’d love to help with your next sign project.

Vandal-Resistant Monument Sign Panels in Atlanta, GA for Winder Public Library

One of the best things about the sign industry is working one on one with a client to determine their exact needs, and then making a recommendation that accomplishes their needs – – and then some. Providing a material option that not only met the demands, but included additional benefits that surprised the client. Such was the case for a recent project for the Winder Public Library in Winder, GA. The library was going through a name change, and needed a replacement monument sign panel. The ideal sign panel would be attractive, easily readable, and would be long lasting and easy to maintain. While the graphics would be simple text, appearance would be an important factor.

Exterior Logo Sign - Winder Public Library

The Options
The majority of monument sign panels are made one of three ways. First are sandblasted wood or sandblasted HDU. This option is quite popular because of its appearance – – with raised graphics on a “blasted” or recessed background, or recessed graphics that have been blasted on a protected background. The second option is engraved sign panels, made out of substrates such as wood, PVC, or acrylic. This option often produces striking results, using a variety of engraving techniques and varying depths. The final commonly-used option is an aluminum pan background with stud-mounted graphics made from metal, acrylic, formed plastic, or PVC. While each of these are excellent options, they do have limitations when it comes to high-traffic areas where durability is key – – especially for applications where vandalism and graffiti are frequently a concern.

The Challenges
Show me an exterior sign at a school, library, bus station, athletic facility, recreational facility, swimming pool, tennis court, soccer field, baseball field, nature trail, train station, apartment complexes, etc., and I’ll show you a target. Signs at these locations seem to be convenient canvases for “aspiring artists” who seem to be able to easily reconcile their need for expression with the public and private costs of their actions. Not only are spray paints and markers a threat to signs in these high-traffic areas, so too are rocks and balls, rackets, bats, and a variety of other tools to wreak havoc on your new sign. Signs in these areas get bumped, bruised, and climbed on.

Finding the Right Sign Material for Your High Traffic Area Project
So, what are the best options for high-traffic area signs? The answer to the question of what product can best survive the challenges of high traffic areas is ColorCore® from King Plastic Corporation. King ColorCore is highly durable, environmentally stabilized substrate that was developed for signage, marine, recreational and playground applications. Available in eighteen color combinations, its multiple layers of contrasting colors means it can be easily engraved using a CNC router to create attractive signage that stands up to the high-traffic demands that most substrates aren’t designed to withstand. ColorCore is available in three standard thicknesses; ¼”, ½”, and ¾”. ColorCore is manufactured using a state-of-the-art process called PolyFusion®, which produces a polymer that is highly impact resistant. ColorCore is also resistant to a wide variety of chemicals, ranging from sulfuric acid to boric acid to petroleum spirits. It is this resistance that makes ColorCore easy to clean, easy to remove graffiti from. King ColorCore is easily recyclable, does not off-gas when being cut or carved, and does not emit harmful gases when burned. ColorCore can be cleaned in most instances using soap and water.

Apartment & HOA - Arbors at Breckenridge - Tennis Court Rules 2

Is King ColorCore® the Right Choice for Your Next Sign Project?
For the Winder Public Library, King ColorCore was the right choice. Their sign was cut from ½” thick black-white-black ColorCore, engraved using a CNC router, and installed directly to the monument. If your next project requires a sign that will stand up to the challenges of a high traffic environment, then King ColorCore might be the best choice! ColorCore can be easily turned into attractive, highly durable, highly-visible monument signs panels, directional or wayfinding signs, amenities signs, building markers, property signs, facility signs, etc. Contact us and we’ll be happy to review the specific needs you have, and help determine if ColorCore is the right product for you!

Value-Added Channel Letters in Atlanta, GA for Benchmark Physical Therapy!

In today’s ultra-competitive business environment, everyone is looking for an edge.  Sometimes that edge can be found in less-obvious places, like storefront signage.

Town Brookhaven is a pedestrian-friendly urban village in Atlanta’s popular Brookhaven area.  Located just off Peachtree Road, residents and visitors can find a wide variety of merchants, ranging from Publix, Marshall’s, and Costco to a variety of trendy bars and restaurants, as well as all types of boutiques and salons.  In effort to create and maintain a consistent, attractive look, the developers of Town Brookhaven mandated a sign criteria that requires each merchant tenant to utilize reverse channel letters for their storefront signage.  One of the newest tenants at Town Brookhaven, Benchmark Physical Therapy turned to Big Mouth Signs for their new clinic at 705 Town Boulevard.  Big Mouth Signs has been a trusted business partner since 2010, and has provided quality signage execution, including site visits, permitting, design, production, and installation services throughout Metro Atlanta and the surrounding area.

Channel Letters - Benchmark - Brookhaven - 1

Reverse channel letter signs are not new, as they’ve long been popular with companies including fashion retailers such as Tommy Hilfiger and Luis Vuitton, as well as restaurants including Maggiano’s Little Italy.  As you might guess, reverse channel letters are manufactured just the opposite of a standard or “front-lit” channel letter.  Instead of an acrylic or polycarbonate face and a metal back, a reverse channel letter utilizes a metal face and a polycarbonate back.  Reverse channel letters are most often installed directly to the storefront façade, but can also be attached to a sign cabinet that is then mounted to the façade.  Once the sign has been installed and powered on, the internal light source illuminates the white painted interior of the letter.  This intense light bounces through the acrylic/polycarbonate back, and creates a visually appealing “halo” effect around the perimeter of each character.

Adding a little personality to your reverse channel letter sign is easy – – starting with your chosen font.  The outer face and sides (aka “returns”) of a reverse channel letter can be painted your choice of custom colors, and can be further enhanced using specialty finishes such as satin aluminum, scratched metal, oxidized metal, etc.  Since most reverse channel letters made today are illuminated using LED, you can also customize the look of the halo effect by choosing from a number of LED color options, including white, yellow, green, blue, and red.

For Benchmark Physical Therapy, we produced 3” deep aluminum reverse channel letters with custom color dark red faces and returns.  The letters were mounted directly to the façade with 1.5” spacers and non-corrosive threaded studs.  The finished product provides a premium look, and adds value to the brand.  While a lease requirement is an excellent reason to choose to utilize reverse channel letters – – but it’s not the only reason.  Reverse channel letters will add to the look of your storefront, and can help separate you from the competition.

Indoor 3D Logo Signs - Nextgen

Lobby Signs for NEXTGEN in Atlanta, GA

Can the right lobby sign add value to your business? Does your sign make a statement? Does it tell a story? Making the right first impression is important in every business relationship, and your lobby sign is a key component in that process. An understated office sign might be telling your customers that your skill level is lacking. For example, imagine going into a dentist’s office, and the sign that welcomes you to the reception area is cheaply made. What other businesses need a quality lobby sign speaking silently to their customers? Insurance office? Law office? Doctor’s office? Engineering firm? If it’s important in their office, might it also make a difference in yours? If you deal directly with the public, the chances are the answer is “Yes”.

A well-designed lobby sign tells current and potential customers that you value their thoughts and opinions about your business or organization. Quality lobby signs communicate that details are important to you, and that appearance matters. Professionally-designed lobby signs add value to your business. There are lots of options available for your lobby or office sign.

What types of lobby signs are available? We custom-design and build our lobby signs, so they are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. All of our lobby signs are professionally designed and manufactured, using an assortment of interesting and visually-appealing materials. Lobby signs are often non-illuminated, but illuminated office signs are growing in popularity due in large part to the practicality of imbedded LED lighting, as well as external spotlights. The two main types of lobby signs are those with which the lettering or graphics are mounted directly to the lobby wall (typically using studs or “pins” and a mounting pattern), and those with which the lettering or graphics are mounted to a “backer” or “background” panel. Background panels also can be mounted directly to wall, again using stud-mounting and adhesives, or they can be mounted using a wide variety of popular standoffs.

What types of materials are used for Lobby Signs?

There are almost as many material options as there are lobby signs. Acrylics are a popular material choice, and can be used both for router-cut dimensional letters and graphics, as well as for background panels. Metals are another top choice, and we have available a wide variety of metals and metal finishes including brushed aluminum, polished aluminum, stainless steel, brass, copper, and bronze. Other excellent choices include a variety of wood options, PVC, and foam.
